What is a breast biopsy?
a breast biopsy is used to check for breast cancer. Typically a very small amount of tissue is removed and checked by a pathologist in the lab.
Why might I need a breast biopsy?
Sometimes an abnormal area is seen on a mammogram or ultrasound of the breast. This area is noted by the radiologist and may need a sampling to determine if the area has an element of cancer.
Lumpectomy Questions
What is a lumpectomy?
A lumpectomy is a way to remove tissue from the breast through a small
incision. Typically this area is removed for concern for breast cancer, although sometimes the area may be negative for cancer.
Why might I need a breast biopsy?

Why might I need a lumpectomy?
A lumpectomy is used to remove breast tissue, and if you have had an abnormal mammogram or biopsy this is used to remove the cancer or abnormal tissue.
Mastectomy Questions
What is a total mastectomy?
This surgery is done to remove all of the breast tissue typically because of a cancer diagnosis. The surgeon has already done a biopsy to prove there is cancer in the breast, and the breast tissue is removed. Sometimes depending on the type of cancer, a reconstructive surgery may be performed at the same time.
Why would i need a total mastectomy instead of a partial?
Total mastectomy is used when the cancer is more invasive, you have higher risk factors for the cancer coming back in the same breast or other breast, or if the location of the cancer is not easily removed with part of the breast tissue.
